Holy Quran:

Quran doesn’t mention a specific word for “Bestiality”. It doesn’t mean it is allowed or it is not a sin. There are many things which Quran didn’t mention directly but yet rules of Quran apply on them.

Homosexuality, Bestiality and Masturbation are forbidden according to following verses of Quran:

Reference: Chapter 23: AL-MU’MINUN (THE BELIEVERS)>> Verse 5-7

Online Source: https://quran.com/23/5-7

Text:

SAHIH INTERNATIONAL

5.  And they who guard their private parts

6.  Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed

7.  But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors

Repeated again in 70:29-31

Explanation:

  • The Phrase “guard private parts”  means abstain from unlawful sexual intercourse wherever this phrase is mentioned in Quran.
  • The Phrase “right hand possesses” is used for “Slaves” in general (Read Quran: 30:28 4:36 4:3 24:58 24:33 and specifically used for “female slaves”( Read Quran: 16:71 33:55 33:50 4:3 4:24 4:25 24:31 33:52) when talking about carnal relations in Quran. Many translators have directly translated “right hand possesses” as “female slaves”. See http://www.islamawakened.com/quran/23/6/default.htm

But whoever seeks anything beyond that intercourse with wives and concubines such as masturbation those they are transgressors who have overstepped the bounds into what is not lawful for them.

Abu Ala Maududi

http://www.englishtafsir.com/Quran/23/index.html#sdfootnote7sym

The sentence “…. but those who go beyond this (in lust for sexual desire), shall be transgressors” has made satisfaction of sex desire in other ways unlawful, whether it be through fornication, homosexuality, sex gratification with animals, or some other means.

Hadiths:

There are few traditions which are reported from the Prophet SAWW about “Bestiality”. I will write them one by one on the basis of the topic.

Curse on those who commits bestiality:

In these traditions the Prophet(SAW) cursed those who commits bestiality. There are two Companions from which Such hadiths are reported. They are Ibn E Abbas and Abu Huraira(RA).

The tradition below is narrated from Ibn E Abbas and declared Saheeh(Authentic) by Albani and Ahmed Muhammed Shakir while Darussalam and Shoaib Arna’ut declared it Hasan(good).

Narrator: Ibn Abbas

The Prophet (SAWW) said:”۔۔۔۔۔۔۔ cursed be the one who commits bestiality, cursed be the one who does the deed of the people of Loot.

So it would be sold therein, lest it be scoffed at’.

Consensus/Ijma:

Consensus/Ijma is the 3rd fundamental source of Sunni Islamic laws after Quran and sunnah. There is a consensus among Mujtahids  that Bestiality is a forbidden act.

Maratubul Ijma by Ibn Hazm

http://shamela.ws/browse.php/book-12446/page-126

وَاتَّفَقُوا أَن اتيان الْبَهَائِم حرَام

There is consensus(Ijma) that intercourse with animals is Haram(prohibited).

Maliki scholar Ibn Qitan(d. 1230) said same in his Masail e Ijma (3663)
http://shamela.ws/browse.php/book-13624/page-597

Fiqh Us sunnah

أجمع العلماء على تحريم إتيان البهيمة

All scholars have consensus on prohibition of bestiality
http://shamela.ws/browse.php/book-9486/page-1189

As for Punishment, Sheikh Wahab al-Zuhayli says in his book “al-Fiqh al-Islami wa Adillatuhu 7/5360” (Islamic Jurisprudence and its Proofs):

أن يزني بآدمية، فإن أتى بهيمة فلا حد عليه باتفاق المذاهب الأربعة في الأصح عند الشافعية، ولكنه يعزر

By Agreement of all four schools of thoughts and more authentic opinion of Shafi’i School, If a man commits bestiality, then there is no Hadd(Prescribed Punishment) for him. Rather for him would be Ta’zir(discretionary punishment).

Analogy/Qiyas:

Analogy is 4th source of Islamic laws after Quran, Hadith and Consensus of Scholars. Although analogy was not required in this case, because the first 3 source were very clear in this case but I want to just make my argument more strong.
Quran criticized people of Lot for transgressing the limit by committing homosexual acts. Analogically, these verses also condemned bestiality.

Reference: Chapter 27: AN-NAML (THE ANT)>> Verse 54-55

SAHIH INTERNATIONAL
And [mention] Lot, when he said to his people, “Do you commit immorality while you are seeing?Do you indeed approach men with desire instead of women? Rather, you are a people behaving ignorantly.”

Here for bestiality , anology would be ”do you indeed approach animal with desire instead of women?”

Reference: Chapter 7:AL-A’RAF (THE HEIGHTS)>> Verse 80-81
Online Source: https://quran.com/7/80-81
Text:

SAHIH INTERNATIONAL
And [We had sent] Lot when he said to his people, “Do you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds?Indeed, you approach men with desire, instead of women. Rather, you are a transgressing people.”

Reference: Chapter 26: ASH-SHU’ARA (THE POETS)>> Verse 165-166
Online Source: https://quran.com/26/165-166
Text:

SAHIH INTERNATIONAL
Do you approach males among the worlds
And leave what your Lord has created for you as mates? But you are a people transgressing.”

Analogically, Lord  created women for mating with men not men or beast and mating of a man with man or a beast is transgression.

Conclusion:

Quran and Hadith traditions prohibit bestiality and scholars unanimously agree that Bestiality is a major sin and not allowed in Islam.

  1. I would like to talk with you about your article. I am a criminologist and researcher specializing in issues related to bestiality, and have been struggling to pull together an article about this very topic. I am frequently asked about the intersection between religion and bestiality and your article helps clarify what I have also said – that the answer is not simple, but bestiality is almost universally considered an immoral act and, in most cultures, a criminal act as well.
